"The BMW betrays the relentless march of technology"

It's improbable that any eulogy to the BMW Z4 3.0-litre will convince you to plump for one if you can't live with the looks. The controversial lines seem to attract or repel in equal measure but underneath the scalpel sharp bodywork beats the heart of a sports car. After the disappointment that was the Z3, fans of the Munich marque are rejoicing.

Although a fire-breathing 343bhp M version of the Z4 is now available, the 3.0-litr...

"It's an unusual car, but spend a little time with it and you'll see the genius in its styling"

Although many of us consider BMW an exemplar of savvy marketing, in-depth product development and peerless focus on functionality, until rather recently they had something of an Achilles heel. They were lousy at building sports roadsters. The Z8 never caught the imagination, most preferring the M5 saloon upon which it was based. The Z3 ' even at its M Roadster zenith ' never had the chassis i...

"It's possible to hunker down into a low driving position and feel really ensconced in rather than on the Z4. Always a good start?"

Although on paper the BMW Z3 was a runaway success with over 300,000 rolling off the production line at Spartanburg, South Carolina, the top brass at BMW were beginning to view it as something of a liability. Its successor, the Z4, is a very different proposition. The burghers at Munich don't want us to think of it as a sunshine'n'smiles roadster. This is a...

"Don't worry. The Z4 2.0-litre has enough power to entertain"

BMW is an organisation capable of learning from its mistakes. Take the old Z3 sports car. By the time it reached the end of its life, it had developed into a very competent roadster, powered by a range of very good engines and offering reasonable value for money. The problem was, nobody really took it very seriously. Its image was hurt by the fact that for quite some time after its introduction, all you could buy was a weedy ...

Replacing BMW's Z3 was never going to be an easy task. Although the Z3 had never received a great deal of critical acclaim, sales had nevertheless been very strong. The Z4 was a very different car, BMW leaning a number of lessons from the product life cycle of the Z3. With the press on their side, Munich was finally able to trade blows with the likes of Porsche and Mercedes in an increasingly competitive roadster arena. A used Z4 makes a very interesting buy, especially as by far the largest ...
